The town was the birthplace of artist Salvador Dalí, and houses the Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dalí, a large museum designed by Dalí himself which attracts many visitors. It was also the birthplace of Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol, inventor of the first combustion powered submarine and anaerobic engine.

Next to the main entrance of the Dali museum, you can find the Sant Pere church which probably raised on the site of a former early Christian church during the 10th-11th century. Towards the end of the 14th century King Peter the Ceremonious ordered the construction of a new church in Figueres, and a Gothic-style church was raised over the romanesque building.

Cadaqués is a village is well known as an artists destination, especially since Salvador Dali moved to Port Lligat. His stay in this village attracted the attention of many artists, like Pablo Picasso, Andre Breton, Paul Eluard, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Federico Garcia Lorca, Luis Bunuel, and many others. Dali's house in Port Lligat is open to the public
